Football Update,

Coach Johnson’s condition is very grave.  Please keep him, Austin and their family in your prayers.  Thanks to Michael Kremer and Luke Walerius for organizing the prayer service and to all the players who showed.  I was very proud of all of you.

The boys and girls basketball teams’ seasons have now ended. This means our spring practice window opens on Monday, March 1st.  Unfortunately the weather and conditions right now are terrible.  We have 3 weeks, the two before spring break and the one after, to get in 10 practices.  I am attaching the tentative schedule (on back) for you.

We tested in lifting yesterday and I was very pleased with the results.  Some of you have been working extremely hard this off-season and it showed.  The month of March we will lift at the high school in conjunction with our spring practices.  I will fill you in on lifting for April and May after Spring Practice.

The Ground Hog Tournament is this week end and it will go on no matter what the weather conditions.  Seniors have been given the schedules of when you are working.  Please be on time. And look for one of your coaches.  Coach Sowards, Coach Schultz and Coach Brown will be there on Saturday and I will be there on Friday.

Remember I can always be reached via my cell.

Football Update - February 10, 2010

Winter weights have been going well. The players have been working very hard. We will finish our first 8 week session at the end of Feb.

We are getting close to spring practice time. Spring practice is only for those players not involved in spring sports. Spring practice will start in March. The exact date will be determined by the success of our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. The state guidelines say we start the following Monday after both teams have been eliminated from their respective tournaments.

1. So if both teams lose in the districts we will start March 1st. We will practice 2 weeks before spring break (March 16-19) and 1 week after.

2. If at least one of the teams makes it to the regional tournament we will not start till March 8th. We will practice one week before spring break and two weeks after.

3. If at least one of the teams makes it to the state tournaments all practices will be after spring break.

Practice days will follow the lifting schedule. We will practice Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the 3 weeks and also on Friday the last week for a scrimmage. We will be done each day by 5:30.

The weekend of Feb. 27th and 28th we will be working the Groundhog Tournament at the VFW. I will be asking the seniors and juniors to be to sign up for a time block to work. We will be cleaning up, selling groundhog wear, chasing foul balls and homeruns. It has been a quick easy fundraiser for us each of the last two years.

Friday the locker room will open at 5:00 and the bus will leave at 6:00.

Jv game Saturday at SK. Locker room will open for Varsity and JV at 8:30.

The JV game with Boone County will be made up on 10/31 the Saturday after the Clark County game. The game is at CCMS. The players need to be at the field by 11:15 ready to go. After the game they need to come back to the high school to put away their equipment. Please make sure they bring some close to wear home form the high school. Last year we did this and alot of the players wore home there girdles because they forgot clothes to wear home.

I'll have some more updates on this later in the week.

Camels QB really lets it fly

Riding pass-happy offense this season

By Ryan Ernst • rernst@enquirer.com • October 1, 2009

Heading into the 2009 season, Campbell County football coach Troy Styer took a look around Northern Kentucky's Class 6A district, where big bruising backs run through holes made by big bruising offensive linemen. Then he looked at his own personnel.

The Camels, he decided, weren't going to line up in the Power I and repeatedly give the ball to 5-foot-5, 135-pound running back Austin "Buzzy" Johnson. Not if they were going to win.

"We had to be a lot more pass-oriented this year," Styer said. "We're not big, so we're trying to take advantage of some things by getting people out in open space. We just thought through the air was our best chance.

"We just don't grow those running backs as big as the rest of them. I don't know what's in the water over there, but it's not over here."

Enter junior signal caller Michael Kremer. At a sturdy 5 feet 11 and 190 pounds, he's like most of his teammates - small for his position. But that hasn't stopped him from putting up big numbers. In his first full season as a starting quarterback, he's leading Northern Kentucky in passing.

Kremer said the moment he heard coaches' new offensive plans - the Camels' typically run four- and five-receiver sets - he was on board.

"I thought it sounded like fun and it was a good idea," he said. "Everyone up here is known for having big, strong guys. We kind of wanted to take those big guys out of the equation and use our quickness."

So far, despite an injury-plagued 2-3 start, the Camels have stuck with the plan: passes, passes and more passes. Johnson, the team's leading rusher, has run for just 45 yards in four games. But he's become a dangerous receiver out of the backfield - catching 19 passes for 255 yards. Five players - Johnson, Nate Geiman, Matt Smith, Corey Cox and Andrew Eshman - have at least 15 catches and at least 175 yards receiving.

The average Northern Kentucky football team throws the ball 19 times a game. Kremer is averaging 40 passes per game.

"There aren't many teams that do it the way we do it," said Smith. "It's tough for other teams to prepare for. We can prepare for them because they're all kind of doing the same thing. We're kind of the oddballs."

Kremer, who has completed 55 percent of his passes, is averaging 259 passing yards per game. He's on pace to finish the regular season with 2,590 passing yards. No area quarterback has thrown for that many yards in the regular season since Highlands standout Gino Guidugli put up 3,067 yards through the first 10 games of the 2000 season.

That's a pretty lofty pace, especially for a quarterback who is just now entering the toughest part of Campbell County's schedule. (The Camels play host to No. 3 Ryle tonight.) But for now Kremer is at the top of the Northern Kentucky passing heap - ahead of more well-known signal callers like Nick West of Conner and Will Bardo of Highlands.

"That feels good, but I throw the ball a lot more than those guys do," Kremer said. "They're great quarterbacks. It just feels nice to have my name mentioned with those guys."

Hello Everyone,

We received $411 from our Bob Evans Fundraising. It was a lot of great food and we appreciate all of those who participated. Thanks!

Angie, our trainer, will be out for over a month due to some surgery. I do not want to disclose her personal information but wanted to let you know this was really hard for her to leave your boys. She was trying to put this off until after the season but it was best to go ahead with it now. She will be receiving a bouquet of purple and yellow iris's from the boys at the hospital. Keep her in her thoughts and know that this was a very hard decision for her. She really enjoys taking care of your children.

I'm beginning to work on another fundraiser with Jalepano's in Cold Spring. They came to us for a fundraiser for one night. We will probably schedule this sometime over Fall Break and will get a percent of all sales for the evening. We may be having a burrito eating contest with the boys too. I'll let you know the date and details as soon as I know more.

Keep motivating your boys! They are awesome football players and a dedicated group of players!

Thanks.

Terry.

In a game that saw momentum shift at a neck-breaking pace, it was fitting that it was decided in the final possession.

Campbell County got the ball back with 4:34 left in the game after Roger Bacon had scored to go up 28-24. Michael Kremer and his offensive proceeded to cruise down the field using their standard no-huddle offense. They ended up getting the ball down inside the five yard line and then needed three attempts before running back TJ Jett scored his second touchdown of the night to put the Camels ahead for good 31-28.

The Camels offense looked calm and efficient on that final drive, but it wasn’t an accident. Coach Troy Styer pointed out after the game that it’s something their team is used to.

“It’s our offense. That’s what we run,” Styer said. “We’re a no huddle football team, so situations like that shouldn’t shake us because that’s what we’re doing all the time.”

The Camels hadn’t trailed in the game since the 2:21 mark in the second quarter, when TJ Jett scored his first touchdown of the game giving his team an 18-14 lead. That score was set up by a momentum changing fumble recovery by the Camel’s Jake Rebholz and then a converted fourth down on a 14-yard pass from Kremer to wide receiver Andrew Eshman.

Kremer and Eshman combined again in the third quarter for a 35-yard touchdown giving the Camels a 24-14 lead. Eshman split time with Kremer at quarterback last season, but coach Styer made the decision to move him to wide receiver this year.

“We just felt we were a better football team having them both on the field,” Styer said. “Michael is a good quarterback and Andrew is a great athlete. We needed a playmaker at receiver.”

Roger Bacon wasted no time in answering though, as they went to their stud receiver Jorian Hudson who outran everyone for a 54-yard touchdown strike with 3:38 left in the third quarter.

Both teams’ defenses then stepped up forcing punts, until the final two scores.

Kremer shouldered almost the entire load offensively as the Camel’s offense was only able to generate nine yards on 25 carries. Kremer finished the game with 351 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Campbell County moved to 1-1 with the win and Roger Bacon’s record also dropped to 1-1.

Hello Everyone,

Great game by the players Friday Night. They never gave up and fought to the very end. We face a very tough Cov. Cath. team Friday night. Don't let the 0-3 record fool you. They have played 3 very tough opponents and got better each week they have played. We are going to have to play our best to go 2-1 for the year. The game is on Insight 6 this week so we need a great supportive crowd to show off for the rest of N.KY.

Practice Scedule:

Tuesday till 5:20

Wedensday till 5:20

Thursday at the high school till 4:00.

Friday the locker room opens at 5:00. The bus will leave at 6:00. Game time is 7:30.

Saturday Varsity is in at 8:00. Jv will report at 8:30 for the 10:00 game at Covington Catholic.

Everyone is off Sunday.

-JV is now 2-0 after a thrilling 14-13 victory at Roger Bacon. The Camels stopped a two point conversion attempt on the last play of the game to preserve the win. Great job JV.

-The freshman game this week will be at CCHS instead of Cov. Cath.

-Senior player signs have arrived and are in my office. If you still need to pay please have your player give it to Ryan Studer or you can give it directly to Theresa Studer.

Thanks,

Coach Styer

Hello All,

Unfortunatley the season did not get off to the start we wanted or expected. Keep encouraging them to play hard and learn. This week is Roger Bacon and they are another very good football team from Cincinnati. They are not as big as Norwood but have a lot of good athletes.

Practice Schedule for the week:

Monday- Till 6:00.

Tuesday- Till 5:20

Wednesday- Till 5:20 (Freshman play their first gam e at SK at 6:00)

Thursday- 7:00-8:00 at Bob Miller Stadium

Friday- Locker room will open at 5:00, the bus will leave at 6:00, and game time is 7:30 at CCMS

Saturday- Jv and Varstiy will report at 8:00am. Game time for the JV at Roger Bacon is 10:00. Directions will follow in another e-mail.

Sunday everyone off.

Unfortunately Friday our clothes dryer broke down so the kids may have brought things home to be washed for the weekend. We apologize for this. Logan will look into it on Monday. Hopefully it is a quick easy fix. So just a heads up.

Saturday night we also have parking at the fair. Coach Brown has a sign up sheet for the players to work. Sophomores will work the 5:00pm-7:00pm slot, Juniors will work the 6:30pm-8:30pm slot and Seniors will work the 8:00pm-10:00pm slot.

Labor day is Monday we will be having practice in the morning from 9:00-12:00.

After practice the seniors will need to stay to have some pizza and visit with last years seniors.

August 26, 2009

Hello,

We will be asking the players to help park cars at the Alexandria fair on Saturday, September 5th. Our time slot is 5-10pm. We will split them into time slots of about 3 hrs that overlap. Just trying to give you a heads up incase they tell you they need to.

Vote for Campbell County/Norwood as WLWT Channel 5's Wildcard Game of the Week: http://wlwt.highschoolplaybook.com/

I also received an e-mail form a former player named Mike Dunn. Mike was a very good player for us that went on to play at EKU. He was recently nominated for the all-century team at EKU and needs our help getting elected. Here is his e-mail and a web-address in case you would like to vote:

Hey Coach Styer, this is Mike Dunn #49 writing you. It's been about 10 years since we last talked. I played as a tight end, and defensive lineman between 96-99. I'm sure there have been plenty of players pass through CCHS since I was around, but I'm hoping you may remember me.

I'm writing you to catch up, and to ask for your help. After I graduated CCHS I went on to play as a D-tackle at EKU. Well, this year is the 100th year of the football program and they are making a All Century Team. They are nominating some of the best player from each position, and people can vote to elect them to the team. As it turns out, I have been nominated as one of the century's best D-line man and need get my vote tally up. It would mean the world to me to make the All Century Team. To Vote, follow the following link: http://www.ekusports.com/sb_output.aspx?form=18. If you could, pass it along to who ever you think would vote for me. The more votes the better!

Thanks, and hope that the team is doing well.

Hello Parents,

Thanks for the great support Friday vs. Scott.  It was a great night for football.  My honest assesmment is we probably didn't play as well as we did the week before but I still think it was a great effort.

Post Game Situation.  I have heard lots about the situation after the

game and the players not leaving the stadium as they have for years.

This is not my decision.  I was told this is the way we will do it.

When your boss tells you to do something it is probably a good idea to

listen.  That being said I think we have an opportunity to maybe start

some new traditions.  I am going to tell the players to meet after they

shake hands with the other team in the end zone on the vocational end of the field.  You are more than welcome to meet us down there, listen to the post game comments from coaches, and visit with the players there before we go up and get on the bus.  If the field becomes an issue we can meet on the half moon blacktop area behind the end zone.  Same for away games as far as I'm concerned.  Change is hard.  I played here and the difference was we went into the locker room and met with coach then we could come back out to see parents and friends or go ahead and shower.  But it was still nice to visit after the game.  Maybe the change will meet everyones needs.  I will keep you updated.

Practice Schedule for the Week,

Monday- till 6:00pm

Tuesday- till 5:15pm

Wednesday- till 5:15pm

Thursday- 7:00pm till 8:00pm at CCMS.  We will meet at the field.

Friday- Locker room will open at 5:00pm.  The Bus will leave for the

CCMS at 6:00.  The game time is 7:30pm.

Saturday-  JV Players (Usually those that did not play much varsity)

will need to be at school by 8:30am.  The JV game is at Norwood at

10:00.  Directions will be in another e-mail.  Varsity players will meet

at 8:00am to watch tape and lift.

All players are off on Sunday.

We need a parent to help tape JV games on Saturdays.  We can supply the

equipment if someone would like to volunteer to tape.

Thanks,

Coach Styer

Just a quick note to say “Thank You”  to Greg Hertzenberg for  the  generous donation of personnel and equipment to thoroughly clean our stadium stands and walkways   .  This was no easy task in the summer heat but your staff worked hard to give the stadium a fresh look!

We are very fortunate to have passionate Camel fans like you and Wendy that are always willing to step up to the plate when it counts most!

Thanks again for everything.

Please pass along our appreciation to Lynlee  Hertzenberg, Paul Guess, Tyler O’Bryan, Adam Franzen, and Tim Samson.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to all who showed up for the Ashland scrimmage. The boy's performed awesome.

I thought I would update you on the schedule this week.

Monday's practice will end at 5:00. We will be out in T-shirt and Shorts and do a lot of conditioning and watch the tape from saturday.

Tuesday's practice will be to 6:00. We are having pictures done at 3:00. Your player should have brought home a picture form on Friday. After the picture we will have a full padded practice.

Wednesday's practice will be in full pads and be till 5:30.

Thursday's practice will be in shells after school and end at 4:30.

Friday's Scrimmage will be at CCMS and we will take a bus this week to the scrimmage. We will be dry running what we will do on game night. After the scrimmage we will load the busses and take them back to the middle school. One change from the past is we will load the busses at the old bus garage and return to school. You can meet and greet the players back at the high school. The administration would like us to try this to stop a congestion problem after the games.

If someone is not going to be at practice for any reason I need to know. It will be an unexcused absence if I am not contacted. Unexcused absence means loss of playing time for the game or JV game for the week. My cell number is 859 802-8168, my school e-mail is troy.styer@campbell.kyschools.us, my school number is 859 635-4161 ext. 2175.

Thanks and have a great week.

Hello Everyone,

We need your help with working concessions stands and spiritwear at the home JV and Freshman games. This year we are also going to have concessions for the 2 Scrimmages on Sat, Aug 15 at noon and Friday Aug 21 at 7:30. Having concessions helps raise money for the football team and is when we ask for your help.

Tammy Crowder is the contact for working concessions. We would love to have 5 people work each concession and hopefully we will get enough that you only have to work one game. We already have enough for the Friday scrimmage with Scott but need a few more for next Sat with Ashland.

We need people to sign up for the following games:

JV (Saturdays)

9/19 NCC

9/26 Boone

10/10 Conner

10/17 Cooper

Freshman (Thursdays)

9/17 Dixie

9/24 Highlands

10/15 Ryle

Besides the scrimmages, there are only 7 home game to work concessions and we would love for everyone to pull together to help the team raise money. One thing we are looking at is to get Charter buses to the Clark Cty game for the team. It would cost $2000 to get Charter buses but I would love for us to be able to do this for them.

If you can work one or more of the above games, please let Tammy know asap.

If you would like to sell spiritwear, let me know by replying to this email. We have tshirts and roster ribbons and will have long sleeve shirts and hoodies for the first game. We sell spiritwear before the home varsity games on Fridays and will be selling them at the scrimmages also.

Thanks for your help. The boys are working really hard and they looked great last night at the scrimmage! I'm so proud of them! Thanks for your time.

Terry Styer

We have the following signed up to work the Scrimmages:

Jan Hartig

Kathy Adams

Susan Miller

Friday Aug 21 6:45

Coach Styer,

It’s time for “Pride Inside 6” and our annual spruce up of Bob Miller Stadium (The Pyramid).  It's hard to believe that another football season is upon us!

The Campbell County Football family workday will be held on Saturday, August 1st from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM.  In the event of rain, we will use Sunday the 2nd as an alternate workday (1:00 PM until 5:00 PM).

The workday format will be similar to year's past.  We will paint, scrape, and give the stadium a general clean-up.  Focus areas will include: painting the front face of the upper stands, surrounding fence, railing areas, wall along the track & goal posts, clean-up of the Press Box, general yard work, and several other touch-up areas.

Although the CC District will generously be providing the necessary paint & supplies, we will need the following items from our volunteers to complete the project:  extra paint pans, wire brushes, drop cloths, extra paint brushes & rollers, clear outdoor caulk, brooms, shovels, gas trimmers, hoses, power washers, rakes, pruning shears, plastic garbage bags, Windex, paper towels, etc.

We also have a particular need for 2 (experienced) paint sprayers for the upper stands fence area.

Last year, we had over 75 volunteers assist with this project.  I know that we will be able to surpass that total this year.  As such, please pass this message along to the CC football family and encourage their attendance.

Thanks for your assistance with "Pride Inside 6".  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

 Sincerely,

Greg Rose

The Campbell County Youth Football League is selling engraved brick paving stones to help turn a field behind Crossroads Elementary School in Cold Spring into a mini-stadium.

The field is there," said Mike Bate, of Alexandria, director of the league. "It's the bleachers, the equipment, the concessions and the lighting that's needed."

The league is self-funded, but operated through an affiliation with Campbell County Schools.

The bricks sold will form a walkway into the stadium at the field for the league for students in grades 3-6 started in 2005. In 2008 the league had more than 200 youth participating as football players, and 150 as cheerleaders.

The idea of the league is to ensure that all the children play, and that they learn in a safe environment, Bates said.

"Football is supposed to be about having fun, particularly at that age," he said.

Since lighting is the most expensive part of the planned improvements, that probably won't happen this year, Bates said.

The brick sale will feature five different sizes starting at $45 for each 4 x 8 inch "Legacy" level engraved brick to $2,000 for a 24 x 24 inch square "Championship" level engraved brick with a target audience of businesses and corporations.

The goal is to raise $42,675 by June 15, and an additional $9,875 by Sept. 9, said Randy Coleman, who announces the league's games and is the pastor at Christ Baptist Church in Cold Spring.

Bates said Coleman is one of the league's biggest supporters.

After this year's initial sale the goal will be to raise an additional $12,000-$15,000 for each of the next four years.

The bricks will create a legacy where one day a father could bring his son to a youth football game and point out a memorial brick in his name that's on the field, Coleman said.

Coleman said the league instills values like good sportsmanship and fair play in the children.

"That's needed not only in athletics, but in our community," he said.

Coleman said there are about 450 practices a year, and the league plays more than 50 games per year.

Coleman set lofty goals for the entire Campbell County Schools' football program, including a Campbell County High School state championship by 2014 because of support for the league at all levels.

The youth league has already served as a feeder program for Campbell County Schools' junior high football team, Coleman said. The seventh- through ninth-grade teams fielded a combined 24-4 record with a roster comprised of former youth football league players, he said.

"Truly, the Campbell County Youth Football League is building tomorrow's powerhouse," Coleman said.

The Campbell County Youth Football League's engraved brick sale for field improvements will feature five different sizes and funding levels.

* $45 for a four-by-eight inch "Legacy" level brick .

* $150 for an eight-by-eight inch "First Down" level brick.

* $350 for a 12-by-12 inch "Camel" level brick.

* $1,000 16-by-16 inch "Championship" level brick (target audience is small businesses).

* $2,000 for a 24-by-24 inch brick (target audience of businesses and corporations).

For more information about buying a brick call Mike at 635-8585.

Offensive Outlook

There are numerous holes to fill. The offense is losing two play makers in Grant Rose and Tony Bishop. The offensive line is losing four out of it’s five starters. Evan Martin, Andy Lay, Ilg, and Katt will all need to be replaced. There is quite a bit of talent waiting in the wings and the competition will be fierce. After flirting with numerous types of offenses, the offense is making a switch to “The System”, a spread style of offense.

Defensive Outlook

The defense looked good in their switch from the 4-4 to the 3-3-5. Linebackers Cody Owens, Jimmy Brickler, and Ross Risner will all need to be replaced. Defensive linemen Nick O’Day, Corey Hunley, Ilg, and Tommy Sampson will need to be replaced as well. Like the offense, there are several athletes available and the competition for playing time will be tough. Coach Terry Brown will look to continue with the success from last year and continue the Camels tradition of having a tough, physical defense.

Overall Outlook

The 2008 Camels played well out of the gate, but stumbled and finished the season with a three game losing streak and missing the playoffs. The Camels return a strong JV team that went 10-0 and a promising freshman team that went 9-1. The Camels will have plenty of competition at several positions and should be strong on both sides of the ball. The Camels have put in a very tough offseason and a good spring football season. The 6A district competition will be extremely tough. Overall, the talent level is there, but it’s up to the Camels to take the next step in their quest for success.
